Preparing for the Rainy Season
Preparing Your Home for the Rainy Season: Essential Tips to Prevent Water Damage
As we head into the rainy season, here are a few tips to make sure your home is properly ready to avoid any water damage this year.
Water Management System
Check your gutters and downspouts. Make sure the gutters are clean and clear of any debris. Your downspouts should be moving away from house. If they go straight down, they likely are going into the sewer system. You’ll want to keep an eye on this – make sure it doesn’t bubble up when raining. If it does, you will want to reroute that water.
Roofs and Siding
Take a look at your roof and siding shingles. Make sure that there are no cracks, holes, or gaps. If you find minor damage, you can likely caulk them to seal them for the rain. If any or missing, or have major damage, you will need to replace them. Check the roof for any moss or any other debris that may be collected there.
Standing Water
Check your crawl space/basement for water. Has water leaked anywhere? Is there any standing water? You’ll need to fix that before the consistent rain starts – it can quickly turn into flooding.
Outdoor Living
Be sure to store any tools, toys, or furniture that are not weather-safe. Make sure things like sandboxes, hot tubs, and pools are properly sealed so that rain cannot leak in.
Taking the time to look at all of these things also is a great chance to take note of the major things to take care of with your home in the next few years.
