History of the Neighborhood

Montavilla, like many neighborhoods in the area, started as a farming community. Called Mount Tabor Village, the area was known for its beautiful orchards. In the 1880s, farmers began selling their land to developers and subdivisions soon began popping up. By the 1890s, the village was home to grocers, butchers, and a bank.

With the construction of the Morrison Bridge around this same time, Portland’s streetcars began reaching destinations further out on the east side. People traveling between Portland and Hood River often stopped in Mount Tabor Village. Streetcars in the area abbreviated the stop first as “Mt. Ta. Villa” and later as “Monta. Villa.” You can probably guess why residents soon started calling their neighborhood Montavilla!

Today, Montavilla is a charming and trendy neighborhood with beautiful parks and plenty of local small businesses. Visit and learn why residents love living there!
