History of Beaverton

Located in Washington County, Oregon, the Tualatin Valley region was first inhabited by the Atfalati tribe of the Kalapuya people. The Atfalati referred to their home as Chakeipi, also known as the “Place of the Beaver.”

In the early 1890s, this area relied strongly on agriculture production, including wheat, berries, lumber, and orchard fruits. As the population grew, so did the need for a transit and road system to connect communities and transport agricultural and wood products. It was an essential boost to the success of the economy. Local farmers and business owners thrived, commercial and residential development exploded, and the town was slowly transformed into the modernized city you see today.

These mass transit lines made it more accessible to the Portland Metropolitan area. As the seventh largest city in Oregon, Beaverton grew as a suburb of Portland and has quickly become a center of commerce and industry. Major companies like Nike and Intel have a strong presence in the community. Beaverton has evolved rapidly from a small agricultural community into a bustling suburban city with over 98,000 residents. Today, Beaverton has a diverse community with a thriving and growing population.
